1. Failure recovery skills. College athletes have great “failure recovery”. This means that after making a mistake they are able to bounce back quickly. College athletes are constantly under pressure to preform at their best in front of their coaches. The pressure requires them to be mentally tough everyday. When they get yelled at in practice for cutting the wrong way they need to be mentally tough enough to move on from that mistake. A college athletes mental toughness is certainly a helpful tool to have in college. They understand that in order to be successful they shouldn’t dwell on their mistakes. Good failure recovery skills is one of the reasons former athletes find success after college.

2. Leadership skills. College sports teaches you leadership skills that can be applied to the real world. College athletes are expected to display good behavior at all times. They do not have the freedom of non-student athletes because they are constantly being watched by their coaches and athletic administration. This teaches them to lead by example. Leading by example in the workplace makes other employees around them better. College athletes are also good leaders because they have excellent motivation skills. They not only have to push themselves everyday but they also have to push their other teammates everyday.

3. Good Work-ethic skills. As a college athlete you are constantly working hard. Most college athletic programs pride themselves on hard work as a key to achieving goals. Without a work ethic it is hard to be a successful college athlete. A good work-ethic is important after college. Without a good work ethic its hard to accomplish things on time.

4. Understanding of Teamwork. College athletes create a strong bond with their teammates in college. This is because of all the valuable time they spend together. They are constantly pushing each other to get better and supporting you when things aren’t going well. The teammates are there for you when your feeling homesick, stressed with exams and any other tough stressful time you are going through. Being a good teammate is a crucial skill to have after college. No one likes to work with someone who is all about themselves and doesn’t make the people around them better.
